Active night vision systems utilize near-infrared light as a light source to illuminate the target, such as infrared LEDs, infrared lamps, and near-infrared lasers. A low-light or low-light camera receives the infrared light reflected from the target, converts it into a video signal, and displays the image synchronously on a monitor screen. This type of night vision device is called an active infrared night vision device.
Passive night vision systems have two types. One type utilizes very weak natural light sources such as moonlight, starlight, and night sky light, amplifying and enhancing them to achieve visibility. This type of night vision device is also called a low-light night vision device. The other type uses far-infrared sensitive detectors to detect the thermal radiation of the target itself. This type of night vision device is also called a thermal imager.
